Dirty B*****d Leeds

January 7, 2011

This won’t mean much to many of the younger generation of Gooners amongst you, but let me assure you to this day I have yet to see a team as violent and completely underhand as the Leeds United of the 1970s.  They were a class apart when it came to causing havoc with nasty tactics, leg breaking challenges, and overall the venom that poured out of their veins was something else.

Vile bastards make the likes of Stoke of today look like ballerinas.

We entertain them in The Cup tomorrow afternoon, and I cannot wait for the game.  For one I shall be in attendance with members of my family, a nephew will be making his first appearance at the home of football, and it will also be my first game in a couple of months so looking forward to taking in the matchday experience again.

I miss not having my season ticket, but on the other hand, I don’t miss the grief it caused me…. the other half etc !!

Secondly, the chance to see some of the lesser lights, maybe the return of Rambo?, is always a plus for me.

Cannot have the calls for the best eleven to be playing, Leeds although no pushovers, should not pose many problems for the 2nd string to dispose of inside the 90.

The game will also be broadcast live on network TV (ITV1) so the whole nation gets to see just what a fabulous squad Wenger has assembled on buttons.

Chesney will be the keeper, Gibbs and Eboue full-backs, Squillaci centre back alongside JD, the midfield should be interesting with Denilson and Rosicky definate starters… Chamakh and Bendy leading the line.

Will Rambo start?  I would be surprised but most overjoyed if he does.

Enjoy.

Well thanks for that informative and well-educated opinion. Why not go the whole hog and enlighten us all on how well-behaved all the other teams were in the 1960’s-1970’s?

I have news for you the present leeds team can mix it if required – if you with all the fancy moves you will probably find out. At least you will have an atmosphere tomorrow

The best football film ever made, The Damned United, summed up everything Leeds United were about in those golden days. Sure every club had a hard man, Tommy Smith at Liverpool, Peter Storey at The Arsenal, Eddie McCreadie at Chelsea etc and so on, but Leeds were a bunch of kicking, fouling, time wasting, cheating sods from the goalie (Harvey) to the physio lol. They look like a team that plays football these days. I just hope the current generation of Leeds fans have evolved from knuckle scraping pre-neanderthals.

  6. The Leeds team of the 60’s and 70’s does get a bit unfairly tagged with that ‘dirty’ label, and really don’t receive enough recognition for just how good they were. Really should have won more trophies. I showed my missus the 1972 cup final tonight as a prelude to tomorrows game, and honestly all but one of the nasty tackles came from the Gunners. (Yes, the exception was Norman Hunter, what’s your point)

As for us fans…. yes, we’re still your worst nightmare. And proud of it. Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow.

How sad it is that you still rant on ’bout the old Leeds. Could it be that you have yet to beat them in a seriously important match ?

And as for the “home of football” – how long have you been at The Emirates???

    I repeat so sad.

    C’mon u spurs

Nice to have some Leeds fan on, truly you were a horrendously dirty team.

You would be banned in this day and age, the stuff you got away with was ubelievable.

Norman bit yer legs should be arrested for war crimes lol

Fair enough you knew how to grind those results, and you absolutely should have won the European Cup in 73.

Looking forward to the game, brings back so many memories.

“The best football film ever made, The Damned United, summed up everything Leeds United were about in those golden days”.

You do realise that the film – and the book – were only loosely based on the events of the time? Which is why many, including the Clough family denounced it. The majority of the ‘facts’ as you saw them were – shock! horror! – made up or exaggerated at best. Or are you really that gullible?

Someone please tell Jaygooner that Harry Potters not real either, don’t know if I have the heart to break the news to him myself.

Dirty Leeds yes, but at that time also Dirty Arsenal, Dirty Chelsea, Dirty Everton, Dirty Liverpool… that was the way the game was played back then or have you simply and conveniently forgotten that?

Truth is, your selective memory, along with that of fans of other clubs, is just sore because we were better at it than you were.

  13. Creebo said

It was a different time /game and I don’t remember the Arsenal teams of the 60s and 70s taking too many prisoners – Storey was a bit tasty as I remember.
If you read John Giles book he say there was huge respect between the Leeds and Arsenal players. I have watched Leeds from 1969 and don’t recall any dirty play. We never kicked Arsenal off the pitch as they wanted to play football. Same with Liverpool. Fair enough, it was an eye for an eyelash at the time but if a team wanted to play football, then Leeds would play football. As for ‘The Damned United’ – it’s fiction. The Clough family were upset by it. Dave McKay sued the film-makers as did Johnny Giles on behalf of those who couldn’t (Billy, Don etc). I think we’ll be beaten tomorrow but look forward to playing you next year. For what it’s worth, I love your style of play… Marching on Together…

oh fuck of you sanctimonious leeds nobends

why the fuck are you to this day known as “dirty leeds”? why?

tell me why you are totally synonymous with the dirty tag from that era?

cos you were fucking worse than dirty, the shit you got away with was gbh, sure all teams had hardmen, but all you done was chop and crop to bore 1-0 wins.

and bollocks did you deserve the european cup, you werent good enough to play football against the ajaxs at the time.

bully boys got shown up against proper teams

you will never be called anything but DIRTY LEEDS

    so fuck off.

LOL, what an illiterate knobjockey you truly are.

“why the fuck are you to this day known as “dirty leeds”? why? tell me why you are totally synonymous with the dirty tag from that era?”

Because that’s what the LONDON press tagged us as and people with brains as small as yours lapped it up. Like I said ALL teams were physical, including Arsenal, not our fault you were piss weak in comparison, that’s the reason for all you pent up anger little man.

“cos you were fucking worse than dirty, the shit you got away with was gbh, sure all teams had hardmen, but all you done was chop and crop to bore 1-0 wins.”

Coming from a Gooner who watched the George Graham side featuring the likes of Keown and Adams can you not see the irony in that?

“and bollocks did you deserve the european cup, you werent good enough to play football against the ajaxs at the time.”

You haven’t got a clue what you’re talking about do you? No really, you don’t. We never played Ajax or Vim for that matter.

“bully boys got shown up against proper teams, you will never be called anything but DIRTY LEEDS”

Actually it was better boys, Dirty Leeds and proud of it.

    “so fuck off.”

Just about sums you up mate.

    mr thicket

the reference to ajax was down to them being european champions 3 years on the trot at the time you were in your pomp

simple when you put your mind to it

the reason the numpties objected to the damned united was because it showed them all up to be exactly what everybody in football was too scared to say.

  24. Deeda LUFC said

Jaygooner, 68 was – only just before my time, but have seen the tapes of the fight, sorry game. Both teams gave as good as they got. Those were the days when if you got a smack in the mouth the done thing was to stand up, not back down and then give some back. These days it’s a backflip, a forward roll and court case.

Have to say Arsenal have always been a club I’ve admired and regardless of the Cup result tomorrow – we’re not going to win the cup so to be honest a 1-0 reverse would do me – I truly hope that you are the one’s who pick up the League this season, better you than the Red Scum from manchester, fucking Chelsea or poxy Spurs.

  25. Creebo said

    @ Dirty Leeds – Apologies…

I’m looking forward to being amongst the 8,500 tomorrow coming to your place. In all honesty, I think we’ll get beat by two or three but hope we show enough to convince you Gooners that we play attacking, joined up football. It’ll be a great day out, whatever the result. For the record, I’d rather Arsenal with the Premiership that Scum or the Scum Blues. Chelski are out of it, I reckon…

No animosity between Leeds and Arsenal NYG. All good fun and truth is you are a team – as you can see from some of the comments left on here – that Leeds truly respect.

If you had been Man u, Chelski, Cardiff or Spurs fans that would have been different LOL.

  30. Deeda LUFC said

DL apologies for some of my comments by the way, was out of order. But I will ALWAYS defend my club and (the majority of) our fans.

  32. Henry_Y9010 said

Arsenal fan, but let me tell you something about Leeds from the Revie era, yes they were nasty in the way they played, but when they turned it on they could play alright.

The little man in the centre of the park, old bremner, could not half give it out but the chap was a player ahead of his time as a midfield general.

Smith up front was a proper striker, and Giles was the Bale of his time, genius little winger.

Give them their dues gooners, we were all at it in them days, they were called dirty leeds and yes they went in harder than most, but they were a hell of a side.

  33. Creebo said

    Yeah, DL… I was a bit harsh too… No offence…Marching on… you get the idea…

  34. Deeda LUFC said

Ball must have been a dirty little sod Revie spent most of the late 60’s and early 70’s trying to sign the bugger!

  35. Jaygooner said

Deeda LUFC I genuinely hope you get promoted Leeds deserve at least that after the shit they have suffred from the authorities in the last few years, and yeah Creebo when we turn up at your manor with 8000 plus thats your ground filled innit lol. Only kidding Leeds fans turn up in their thousands to see sheep shagging contests hehe

  36. Creebo said

@ Deeda… That was a strange one. Who would he have replaced? Billy was still in his pomp and Giles was with us until 1973. In those days you only had two on the bench.

  37. The Don said

So what if we were dirty?

We won within the rules and that is what rattles most to this day.

Watch the lad becchio give your custard defence a going over.

Don’t say you was not warned.

  38. Creebo said

@ Jaygooner – I’d rather be seen up a sheep than within 20 miles of Old Trafford… For the record, I’ve never had a sheep…

  39. Deeda LUFC said

We get called arrogant for saying this Jay but I’m sure the likes of Arsenal look forward to playing the likes of Leeds in the league far more than the likes of Wigan.

Sheep shagging no that’s the Baadiff fans I should know I live in South Wales…

Best of luck for the rest of the season whatever the result tomorrow.

Oh and a friendly tip, our midfielder Bradley Johnson may be a confessed Arsenal fan but be warned if he lines up a shot and you are sat in rows X to ZZ behind the goal, brace yourself and get ready to duck.

  40. Creebo said

@ Deeda – Re Johnson.., it’s funny because it’s true!

  41. Jim said

Well said mate on all points…just such a shame we have to keep educating all these media-fed southern fairies.

    @JayGooner

Are you saying ‘The Damned United’ is better than ‘Escape to Victory’?!!

I hope the Emirates Library is ready for an invasion…best put your earmuffs on lads, its going to get noisy

    MOT

  42. Jim said

P.s re Johnson – best warn the executive boxes too…

  43. Deeda LUFC said

Creebo, I have no idea why he was after Ball mate – probably cos he always played well against us. I read a few times the Don was keen on Bally though. Where would he have played him? That would have been for Don to decide and he was far more qualified to say where and how than I ever will be.

It was only one sub in those days too and that was only from ’65 onwards, two subs came much later, mid to late 80’s I believe.

Famously at the time Don was also keen on another midfielder, Colin Bell at Man City.

  44. Creebo said

@ Deeda – You’re right re one sub. I stand corrected. Asa Hartford almost signed too. Didn’t he fail a medical with a hole in his heart or something? Incidentally, John Giles book is a belter. Well worth a read…

  45. Jaygooner said

Jim I must admit Sylvster Stallone was awesome in Escape to Victory. And Michael Caine wow!The Leeds fans will get the stadium buzzing thats for sure, Red Action have some ideas to get the Library2 singing so looking forward to a great match. Hopefully Almunia will take his chance to escape to emulate that wonderful Oscar winning film

  46. Deeda LUFC said

Yeah Asa Hartford was as good as signed until the hole in the heart thing was discovered. No loss though as he was never true quality. Ball or Bell on the other hand were two of the only midfielders in the country who could have lived with what we already had.

Will have to give that one a try. Don’t normally go for autobiographies but might make an exception for ‘the brains’ book.

  47. Deeda LUFC said

Jay don’t forget about Russell Osman, made that film for me and where the hell was John Warks Oscar 😉

Is it just me or has there never been a truly great football movie? And no Fever Pitch doesn’t count LOL.

  48. Deeda LUFC said

Read somewhere that John Wark only had one line in the film but his Glaswegian accent was so strong they later had to dub it. Harsh.

“chop and crop to bore 1-0 wins????”

1-nil wins???? – what was it people said about the Arsenal back then?

Chop and crop? hmm, I really suggest you do some fact checking.

Anyway, regardless of all this banter, I don’t expect us to have a prayer today, but that won’t stop me singing my heart out for the lads.

Unlike the Chelsea’s and ManUtd’s of this world, and as
with Liverpool, Arsenal are a side for which I, as a Leeds fan, have always had great deal of respect. The cup is fun, but I don’t really care if we win, lose or draw. Our league campaign is far more significant that this cup distraction. However, I really do look forward to the day there are points at stake in this matchup once again.

  50. Chris said

    Says it all mate

“I miss not having my season ticket, but on the other hand, I don’t miss the grief it caused me…. the other half etc !!”

You can still write on here, but you dont go to the games anymore? you slag off Leeds, but you don’t go to the Emirates, sure you will probably win, but at least the Leeds supporters are true fans, not watching the game on the tele, or following the score on teletext

Oh, and for the record I am a season ticket holder at Elland Road, and you have no right to accuse Leeds of being dirty, times were different then, and all teams played hard, and if you look at the videos from the 70s you will see Arsenal playing exactly the same

  51. ASKY LUFC said

Should be a decent game today. re.Johnson – make sure executive boxes have strong glass. re.Alan Ball – The Don may have wanted cover for Mick Bates!

We entertain them in The Cup tomorrow afternoon, and I cannot wait for the game. For one I shall be in attendance with members of my family, a nephew will be making his first appearance at the home of football, and it will also be my first game in a couple of months so looking forward to taking in the matchday experience again.

The author states he will be attending the game today with his family.

Never mind, you being the biggest, greatest leeds fan on the planet.

Some of the comments from leeds fans above are a credit to them.

Never hated them myself, but you were certainly a team that was dirty, nobody can deny that you bullied the life out of most teams in that era.

Should be a good one today.

  53. LUFCer said

It is hard to respect the @RSE players/mgmt of today compared to the 60s & 70s version. Then they had real men as players.

Today, its snoods and hair gel and whinging twat of a manager (technically good, yes, but 100% unlikeable).

Today @rse players will break a nail and go running to mum, after a sly elbow before running away that is ala Bergkamp style.

Hopefully Leeds will do a Stoke style tough approach and can only hope the ref recognises its a man’s game, with tackles actually allowed.

Needless to say the @RSE players will be demonstrating their gymnastic abilities for rolling, couple with some crying.

@RSE players of 60s/70s can only look at todays @RSE “men” (SIC) and spit in the dirt at them and their soft but cheating attitude.

  59. Good effort from the Leeds players today… showed the moronic City scumbags how you can use a fraction of £400M to come to the Emirates with a side that can defend resolutely and attack with zest.

    We were lucky for sure.

Sat in the clock end upper, directly above all the away supporters.. were defo the loudest away fans I’ve ever heard at the emms, but also the most troublesome for our stewards…. they caused havoc for the entire match, at least 50 must have been chucked out… which is a very high number considering.

Looking forward to a repeat of the classic 3-2 aet win in the cup replay at elland rd back in 1992 when old sumdger smith grabbed the winner at the near post in extra time with pens looming.

Leeds are a club that deserve to be in the Premiership way ahead of the likes of Stoke and Blackburn.

Proper club, proper supporters…. but you were still a proper Dirty lot back under the big Don 😉

  60. Wenger bang on with his comments today after the game…

“They did very well, were very aggressive but in a good way, not a negative way, they closed us down everywhere and we had problems to pass through their lines. They were dangerous as well and it was important for us not to give a goal away, but we did.

“They were positive, they played longer balls but on the second ball they were well-organised, they were quickly on us and maybe our game was not quick enough to get out of their pressure.”
